We used to make sandwiches out of them with butter and marmite, or just dunked them in our tea (as a kid I could eat half a packet easily!). Sometimes we drenched them with Illovo syrup, and they always tasted good crumbled up in custard and jelly! I loved nibbling off the frilly edges first before delivering the death-blow bite to the center. When I got pregnant with my son, the only thing that helped with the nausea was this innocent little biscuit and our native Rooibos tea.
Maybe it was nothing but a placebo effect, but hey, it worked! :)

As far as I am aware McVities don't sell bourbons in individual packets in this country. Am I wrong in this, do they sell McVities bourbons over here or is there a whole world of forgain export biscuits that are shipped out of the country with out our knowledge. whats going on?
ps marie biscuits ( a posh persons rich tea) do they still make them any
|Nicey replies: Its all very complicated really. Basically you have the giant that is United Biscuits, whose main brands in the UK are are McVities, Crawfords and the recently acquired Jacobs. Bourbons and Custard creams here are always Crawfords (as are Marie which you can still get (Sainsburys) green pack ). UB has acquired lots of Spanish biscuit firms since the 1990s and are bringing UK brands over to Spain, many of which are being baked in Spain. They use the McVities brand abroad because it is more recognisable to ex pats. They have tried the reverse bringing Spanish brands over here under the Crawfords name as it happens but it didn't really catch on.
In response to Sue Northcott's horror at Marie biscuits + Vegemite, as an Aussie girl who's been eating Vegemite for all my 22 years of life, I feel like I have to offer some kind of a response. As kids, it used to be great fun to sandwich butter or margarine + a generous layer of Vegemite between two savory multigrain biscuits called Ryvitas and squeeze to awake the tiny brown and yellow worms beneath! (I can't remember if Ryvitas are available in the UK, I doubt that they're exclusively Australian). So while Marie biscuits are quite different from Ryvitas, and I concede that it's probably not the nicest combo, it sounds like Sue's classmate was trying to make do and recreate an Aussie favourite (probably in the absence of Ryvitas).

At my Welsh class last night we were very kindly given a plate of biscuits to go with our tea. Amongst them were some Maries. It's been many years since I've indulged in that childhood favourite, the Marie Sandwich (with best salty Welsh butter, of course) and I was horrified to notice that although the biscuits had lots of little dimples there were no actual holes.
This means that you wouldn't get the little butter worms when you squeezed the biscuits together. Is this the usual state of affairs these days, or were we supplied with inferior Maries? (Incidentally, an Australian girl in the class said that her favourite Marie Sandwich involved butter and vegemite. Doesn't bear thinking about, really!)

If your looking to blame somebody then try the Dutch I think they make most of the Marie biscuits we eat.
|My fondest memories of the much maligned Marie are of my mother sandwiching it either with best butter, or on truly special occasions that wonderful concoction tinned condensed milk. Both combinations are wonderful when dunked.|
