Love your site, it makes me laugh no end.
One thingthat I think should be mentioned whilst talking about the legendary Custard Cream, in my opinion the "Holy Grail" of the biscuit world is that rather than simply taking them apart, as you discuss, you can take two apart, dunk the sides that managed to separate themselves from the cream and then stick the two creamy halves together to produce a kind of double cream custard cream as a sort of "pudding biscuit" for the post-dunk comedown

I am a big fan of the custard cream and specifically the dunking of them. Because of this I have a word of warning for those travelling abroad trying to find a biscuit of equal standard as those in the UK. A recent excursion to Australia found me trying several different brands of custard cream and none matched the texture to even the bargain brands in the UK. I discovered round versions and ones with different patterns and they all seemed to be slightly harder. This made dunking a more tedious process and several seconds were lost resulting in less dunked biscuits before the tea or coffee gets cold. I endured a year in this country under these conditions and it was only the beautiful scenery, relaxed way of life and incredibly friendly people that helped me through these torturous times. Keep up the good work

Sir,
I had a revelation this week. I used to think custard creams were just an also-ran, run-of-the-mill, ordinary WI coffee morning type of bsicuit but when I sat down for a nice relaxing elevenses yesterday morning I found some in the biscuit tin and because there wasn't anything else in there I ate one with my cuppa.
It tasted lovely, so I had another one.
I now think custard creams are vastly underrated and would like to encourage as many people as possible to shake off the stigma of eating what are often thought of by the unenlightened as 'ordinary' biscuits and appreciate every individual species as a tasty snack in its own right.
I would also like to apologise to an biscuit lovers I might have offended with my (formerly) bigoted views about so-called 'ordinary' biscuits.
Every biscuit is an individual, and ought to be treated like one regardless of colour, taste or texture. I intend to write to my MP to urge him to introduce a Biscuit Equality Act to Parliament at the nearest possible opportunity, with equal representation at coffee mornings and tea parties for all types of biscuit to end this scandal of biscuit discrimination.

And who introduced Nicey to the wonders of the biscuit tin? As a small boy on his frequent visits to me at Clements Hall he would come into the kitchen, make straight for the biscuit tin and begin to gorge - Custard Creams were a particular favourite.
Once, in an effort to preserve the Custard Creams for longer than a few moments of a Nicey-Attack, I hid them at the bottom of the tin. To be confronted with the spectacle of Nicey scrabbling frantically in the tin - stopping for a moment and looking at me crossly whilst saying `Haven`t you got any DECENT biscuits!`.

Lovely to hear from you. Glad you like our site. Yes, I've often said that my first biscuit encounters were of the Custard Cream variety, and in fact the Custard cream review mentions this.
Of course you can come to the next Marrow smashing, all of this years crop were consigned to Castle Nice's composting facility on Sunday, but there will another lot along next year. Of course the marrows from the year before were used as ammunition by Prawnzilla in his tussle with Citrus Sheep. |
