Light Pollution

Monday 6 Sep 2004
We spent Saturday night camping under the stars. Except due to the fact that most of the other campers in the campsite had all sorts of lamps glaring out we couldn't actually see many of them. Which was a shame, as it was a lovely clear night. Why do people insist of having so many lights on? It's not necessary at all, and I wish they'd stop it and look up once in a while instead.
Aunty Deluvian, Hickory, Pa, US You are absolutely right -- my bit of the USA isn't quite primitive enough,
and my back garden is brightly lit all night by lights over the parking lot
of the telephone company 2 doors down -- it's terrible; I'd far rather look
at stars. I've complained but of course it doesn't do any good. I wish you
were on the local equivalent of the Parish Council -- as allies, maybe we
could make them mask the lights.
And shouldn't Campers have better sensitivities than the nasty phone
company? I don't get it. If they want lights instead of stars, they could
stay home.

Wifey replies: And why do lots of people have those little solar powered lights in their gardens these days? The garden doesn't need lights. Are they for the hedgehogs or what?

Graeme Nicholls I agree,
Nowadays you have to travel to somewhere quite remote to observe the wonders
of the cosmos. But even when you're up on Dartmoor with you flask of tea
and a fresh packet of custard creams, getting ready to gaze upon the majesty
of our universe there always seems to be some annoying source of light
getting in the way. Haven't we all been told to turn off the lights when we
don't use them? Well what about the ruddy outside ones as well? In this day
of ultra-safety why must we walk around in neon coated pallor? Can't we all
just carry torches? Maybe even a flask-torch combo? With a biccy dispenser..
hmm.. Dibs on that patent.
Wifey replies: Now there's an idea. It would make those midnight trips to the biscuit tin much easier too
