McVities reveal crumb test dummy

McVities have revealed that they created a biscuit munching robot to help with the development of their new Milk chocolate and Orange Digestive. With its mechanical mouth and teeth the Crumb Test Dummy has been specially designed to munch biscuits and produce crumbs in the same way as the average human.
		In quantitative terms, Crumb Test Dummy research has shown that on average, each 300g packet of 18 Milk Chocolate & Orange Digestives produces 1.8g of crumbs when eaten.

McVities claim that an average of between 0.08-0.12g per biscuit is considered the optimum weight of crumb production for a chocolate coated Digestive. While these figures may seem negligible, a sideline to the main Crumb Test Dummy research has enabled McVitie’s to calculate the size of Britain’s annual crumb production. Based on the consumption of McVitie’s Digestive range alone – Britain’s best-selling biscuits – an incredible 127.8 tonnes of crumbs lie between the pages of magazines, the keys of computer keyboards and the cushions of sofas up and down the country. McVitie’s defines the crumbliness of a biscuit as ‘the mechanical textural attribute relating to a low level of work required to break a biscuit into small fragments’. Of course this is precisely the sort of thing we have always imagined happens inside a biscuit factory. Nevertheless when we found that the new Digestive seemed to be a bit more crumbly than its predecessors we hadn't made the now obvious assumption that robot biscuit cruncher had been developed.
