Kia ora Nicey and Wifey,
Had heard about your web site quite some time ago when the hubby and i were still living in the UK.
Glad to see you are still going strong.
We live happilly in New Zealand and my favourite biscuit out here so far has to be the 'Kingston' by Arnotts - it sort of reminds me of a Gypsy Creams from years ago in Scotland, where i was born.
However, it is about half the size of a Gypsy Cream and the biscuit halves are more golden coloured but the Kingston tastes very nice especially dunked and is kind of more-ish as one is never quite enough and i usually end up eating about two or three quite greedilly and quickly the minute the tea is poured!! Oops - i have to limit them and look at them longingly in the packet or i could end up turning into a biscuit! Hahah!

Nicey replies: Yes those Kingstons are fairly much the same idea as the Gypsy Cream, which made a brief come back here a year or two ago. They are made under licence by Arnotts from Bakers of South Africa, and we reviewed them a good while ago now.

Bad news about gypsy creams I'm afraid. I wrote to McVitie's and apparently they are no longer manufactured due to a 'slower selling rate' which I find hard to believe! |
Nicey replies: Oh dear, that's rubbish news isn't it. It makes you wonder dosn't it about exactly what is going on. We know that there is a demand for these biscuits and yet they failed to turn up in a single supermarket chain to our knowledge. Obviously that makes it tricky for the public to buy them leading to a 'slower selling rate'. Who is to blame? The sales force at McVities or the buyers for all the different supermarket chains.

Dear nicey,
Just found your site and saw your review of Romany creams. I remember as a kid during the 60's, here in the UK, wolfing down packets of 'Gypsy Creams'. I can't remember who made them or what they were like and I don't know if they are still about. A Google search for 'Gypsy Creams' will yield some interesting results. Apparently they are the favourite biscuit of TV quizmaster Richard Whitely (channel Four's 'Countdown') and recipes for them abound. I suspect that Gypsy Creams are the non-PC equivalent of the South African 'Romany Creams'.

Nicey replies: Yep, we are up to speed with all of that including the dodgy Google search outcome. Typically when using Google to search for biscuit stuff it either brings up dubious stuff or our site. Interestingly Arnotts in Oz make Romany Creams under licence from Bakers, and call them Kingston. I picked up a pack a little while ago in the Australian shop in Covent Garden. |
