Hello Biscuit Lovers,
I remember cartoonies from my childhood. As they are no longer widely available I have replaced them in my lunchbox with "Hello Panda" biscuits. They meet all Nicola's requirements too, as they are small; spherical; chocolate filled; decorated with a cartoon (fore mentioned panda doing lots of exciting activities, like smelling a flower and driving a car); and they come in a box which has a little foil bag inside to keep them fresh, not that that's a problem in my house.
I'm not sure how easy it is to get hold of them outside Liverpool, but I get mine in Chinese supermarkets. A box costs about 85p, pricey I know, but they're worth it.
To save Nicola from disappointment I feel I must place my hand on my heart and admit that Hello Panda's are not as nice as Cartoonies, this may be because Cartoonies have been elevated in my estimation due to their departure from the shelves, but I think it's probably the inferior chocolate.
Hope this is helpful,
Cath
(By the way, a friend bought me a box of the strawberry flavour 4 months ago, and they are still in my cupboard, enough said.) |

Glad to see the site is still going from strength to strength. There was a bijou featurette in the London Metro which was very complimentary.
I recently experienced a new hybrid creation, which is well worth exploring. The "After Eight" biscuit. The item itself resembles a small After Eight chocolate, but the chocolate covering is concealing not the expected minty goo, but a very crunchy, very minty biscuit. Extremely satisfying, and maintains an impressive degree of structural integrity when dunked. Admittedly, it is usually the case that chocolate/biscuit hybrids such as this resemble something straight from the laboratory of Dr Moreau. But this is the exception proving the rule.
Also: whither the "Mikado" biscuit? For those not aware, the Mikado was a long (6" approx) thin stick of unsweetened biscuit (of similar diameter to a strand of raw spaghetti). Seven-eighths of the length was dipped in dark chocolate, thus creating a juxtaposition between, and a synergy of, flavours. The un-dipped section provided a useful handle for dunking purposes. It was almost, if I may be permitted to enter the stratosphere of pretension, a gestalt biscuit. It was also available in a variety where the chocolate was orangey (but this detroyed the essential purity). But WHERE HAS IT GONE? No longer available in Waitrose, I now worry that it may have ceased production, and gone to that great biscuit barrel in the sky. Any knowledge of the current whereabouts of the Mikado biscuit gratefully received.

McVities Milk Chocolate Digestive Review |
Nicey,
Interesting digestive facts from Martin. I have a conspiracy theory on this. McVities claim of how many of their chocolate digestives are "eaten" each day is purely speculation, I know for a fact that the company are unaware of my intake of the biscuit. Therefore they must be basing their figures on how many packets are "bought" each day. It's my theory that some of the top dogs at McVities are buying huge quantities of their own product (for which they no doubt claim some sort of profit share anyway) in order to make us think the chocolate digestive is more popular than it is. Well, it's either that or they are force feeding them to a load of captive fat blokes in the McVities factory....
Jim.
PS. Nice grail. |

McVities Milk Chocolate Digestive Review |
Nicey
Following my request for information about the Barmouth biscuit I have been doing a bit of research. I thought that the United Biscuits web site might throw some light on the matter as they seem to dominate the biscuit world. Sadly, they were no use whatsoever but something caught my eye. They claim that "Over 65 million packets of McVitie's Chocolate Digestives are eaten in the UK everyday" - can this be true? That means we are each consuming more than a packet each a day. Much as I like the chocolate digestive, I'm nowhere near this level - who is eating my share? Also, this figure does not include non-McVitie's brands. So many questions. |
Nicey replies: Yep the interweb is fairly ropey for finding out about biscuits, which is one of the reasons we started up NiceCupOfTeaAndASitDown. Our calculations agree with yours on the chocolate digestives, we would all need to be eating a relentless 1.12 packets daily, and that's on top of our other biscuit intake. |
