Hiya Nicey
Lovin’ your work btw, however on to more pressing things. I was wondering which is the better digestive biccie, the one with choccy or the one without? And should it be milk choccy or plain? I just don’t know. I cannot decide. I have devoured packs of the said digestives in order to find out, but can’t make up my mind. Should I just give up and start nibbling on ginger biccies (which I also love to bits), or continue in my digestive quest for taste truth?

I liked your site which someone in the office suggested viewing while I held forth on the unmatched superiority of the choclate hobnob.
I don't know if you know but a Twix is offically (in the eyes of the Inland Revenue) a biscuit and as such does not incur VAT in the way say a Mars or Snickers would. Dull, pedantic and ultimately pointless information I'll grant you but if you didn't know - you do now.

| Nicey replies: You may well be right, as a chocolate covered biscuit it would definately inccur VAT. The rates may be different between chocolate biscuits and chocolate bars, I don't know, VAT gets very odd on these sort issues. |

Hi,
My colleagues and I have just been having a heated debate and wondered if you could clear something up for us.
If the Kit-Kat is a chocolate covered biscuit, is the chunky kit-kat still a chocolate covered biscuit or has it made a successful transition to fully-fledged chocolate bar?

| Nicey replies: Yes I can see how this is can be troubling. The KitKat has always been ambivalent about what it is, preferring to sit on the fence. Of course it would appear that with the chunky they have firmly aligned themselves with the chocolate bars, and in doing so cast doubt amongst those who would call the conventional KitKat a biscuit. Personally I don't feel the need to make hard and fast calls on the KitKat's nature. The big Venn diagram of biscuits would simply move the chunky KitKat out of the union of chocolate bars and chocolate covered biscuits, into chocolate bars. It could still sit next to its forbearers though so that it doesn't look too dramatic. |

Just gotta say that i`ve just tried "Tesco`s Fair-Trade Double Choc-Chip cookies" and they are absolutely fantastic!! Normal biscuit fare in this house is Lotus Originals (although the Choco-Leibnitz have been going down well - if a little too sweet & rich for gluttonous consumption!)
I`m used to the normal Maryland - style cookie - small and thin , but these babies are a revelation !
Produced in the UK using Fair-Trade Cocoa and Sugar they are similar to the very expensive "soggy-bake" cookies that you can get. They are also huge ! (65mm across x 10mm thick) . They`ve a gorgeous texture and are very dark and rich.
Highly recommended :-)
they are the perfect accompaniment to a cup of fair-trade tea - yum !
whilst on the subject of toast (were we?) - i`ve got to suggest you buy a tesco`s organic thick sliced loaf - wonderfully nutty flavour when toasted - and thankfully as it`s not very popular you can generally pick up one at a reduced price :-)

Please try to pursue the re-creation of Chocolate Olivers.
I was just thinking about them today (while drinking my afternoon cuppa) and decided to hunt for them on the internet..... which is how I found your splendid website.
The last time I got hold of some Chocolate Olivers was probably over ten years ago, in a very upper class grocers in Oxford. Unfortunately they'd been on the shelf too long and were not fit for consumption. I wrote to express my extreme disappointment and horror, and all I got was a voucher. I
guess they'd already disappeared by then. I see that you've put in a plea with the newly re-emerged H&P people to put these magnificent creations back into production. Christmas morning ritual (hot chocolate and endless Chocolate Olivers for elevensies while opening presents for the next few
hours) hasn't been the same these last few years! So please renew your efforts to persuade them to re-create their finest.
It used to be a case of "There are Chocolate Olivers.... and then there are the other biscuits!"
Your comments represent one small flickering candle of hope......

| Nicey replies: Well Jenny Barnet who presents Good Food Live on UK Food, which I appear on from time to time, always goes on about Chocolate Bath Olivers as being her favourite biscuit. I've never had one and so I'd like it too if somebody made them. To be honest I think its Jacobs who make the Bath Oliver under license who would be the chaps to pester. |
