Dear Nicey,
I just spotted Jim Fussell's question re: whether anybody else out there sniffs their tea bag before making a brew. Well Jim, you're not alone - I'm very partial to a cup of lightly brewed Darjeeling, one of the delights of which (for me anyway) is the wonderfully fresh aroma. I always prolong the experience by sniffing the teabag on my walk to the kitchen (when at work - at home I keep my teabags handily by the kettle!), and whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. The only problem is that recently I've become a bit of a convert to loose tea (thank goodness for Wittards - tea-lovers heaven!) and sniffing loose tea is potentially a life-threatening experience. You have to be very careful not to actually let your nose come in contact with the tea whilst sniffing, as you would with a tea bag - I'll let you imagine the consequences otherwise...
So, go on Nicey - give sniffing a try!

Nicey replies: Considering that I have great difficulty actually tasting the subtle delights of Darjeeling (and no I don't put milk in it) maybe I would be best off snorting it.

Does anyone else out there have a good sniff of their tea bag before making each cup of tea....or is it just me. It just struck me that I may have a strange habit.
Jim. |
Nicey replies: Jim,
I was fretting only this morning that the nose icon hadn't had an outing for a while so I'm going to broaden its remit as of now, to 'smells' and not just people who allegedly smell of biscuits.
I sometimes make Pyramid bag more presentable by pulling all its little corners taught and putting in a few creases so it looks like a proper tetrahedron. I imagine the landed gentry have people to do this for them. |

The "poor children smelling of biscuits" syndrome still lives on. I teach Primary school children and there are many unfortunates who smell of rich tea biscuits - maybe this is another regional variation: rich tea biscuit smell = south London area.
I have to say that this aroma is preferable to the other common smell - fish.

It's true, some children really do stink of digestives. I always wondered what that smell was and in my observations I have noticed that girls were more inclined towards the digestive aroma whilst the boys smelt more like chicken burgers.
I was always the one forced to hold their hands during games because I protested a little too loudly about them in front of the teacher.
On another note, has anyone ever made the fatal mistake of eating a dog biscuit instead of a fig roll? They look the same.

My dear Nicey
I can confirm that kids also smell of digestives in Grimsby. At primary school I had to sit next to a particularly aromatic girl at lunchtimes. What I cannot confirm however, is whether or not she was poor. Her cardis never seemed to fit (arms too short), but maybe that was she was a bit portly.
Of course this might mean that she was fat (oops sorry not very nice of me) because she ate far too many digestives and therefore smelled of them (??!!). I dunno.
But have you ever noticed that when dunking digestives you can only fit a little bit in the cup, and when you nibble off that bit, the rest fits perfectly for dunking? Ahem.
Ta ra!

Nicey replies: Joanne,
Thank you for that. The large diameter of the digestive, when dunking, teaches us temperance and restraint through biscuit reshaping, unless they have snapped in half in which case its full speed ahead. |
